A Note on Names

• In contrast to your labeled drawings where you identified the name of parts via desk research, unless you can find a standard name, you might have to name your observations yourself.
• Aim for simplicity and clarity. The more new words you can eliminate the better.
• As you design your collection of words, consider how they work together conceptually to someone who knows nothing about your project.
• You may need to iterate on your words until they work together clearly.

Identifying Ecological Relationships (Deductive)

• Find the interactive relationships between the parts of your urban object and the wider world. Where the part is a static touchpoint, the wider world is mobile and interacting with your object.
• In your list of parts, for each part, imagine phenomena in the wider world that it might interact with (human, weather, etc). When you find one, note it down as an environmental factor for that part by creating a row for each part-environment relationship and linking it to the part ID and part name.
• Name an ecological relationship that describes an interaction between the part and the world. When you find an environmental factor, see if it also has interactive relationships to other parts to create more ecological relationships. The goal is to come up with as many relationships as possible.

Affinity Mapping Observations (Inductive)

• Use the images that you took during your survey as material for affinity mapping. They will be your observations about the ecological relationships you've identified. You will group common observations together for each ecological relationship and to organize and structure observations.
• For example, in the example above the ecological relationship was drainage flow, which is related to holes. The images are grouped into different kinds of holes and the groups are labeled. The same was done for human encounter and grates.
• As you develop affinity groups, you may notice more groups of observations to identify new environmental factors and develop new ecological relationships. In doing so, you will iterate on your table and derive more data.
• For example, in the example above when looking at holes, it became clear that there are storm drains that do not have holes and instead have art, or steam coming out of them. These spurred new lines of thinking about how drains communicate to humans.

Developing Observation Ranges

• Order and structure the observations for an affinity group.
• For each ecological relationship, name the different observations.
• Identify and name the endpoints of the order you've developed to create an observation range.
• There may be more than one observation range for each set of observations. They can be logically derived.
• Note any reasonings and ambiguities in the development of ranges in your research deck.
